Group 1 is a multi-stage exam. Your Preliminary score determines whether you write Mains. Focus exclusively on Prelims MCQ until you qualify — then shift gear for descriptive writing.
Polity and Current Affairs together contribute ~65 out of 200 questions in Prelims. These are your highest-return investment areas. Read Laxmikanth's Indian Polity cover-to-cover.
Group 1 History questions go beyond Samacheer textbooks. Read Bipin Chandra's "Modern India" and Tamil Nadu State textbooks (11th & 12th standard History).
For Science & Technology, subscribe to ISRO news, follow PIB, and read the Science & Technology section of The Hindu. Questions on AI, Biotechnology, and Space are increasingly common.
Current Affairs preparation should span 12 months before the exam. Group 1 questions often reference events from the previous full year. Maintain a handwritten digest.
For Mains, choose your optional subject early and master it completely. History, Polity, and Economics are popular choices because the syllabus overlaps with General Studies.
Take full 3-hour timed mock tests every weekend without interruption. Group 1 Prelims requires answering 200 questions in 3 hours — time management is as important as knowledge.
The Interview carries significant weight (50+ marks). After clearing Mains, work on communication, current awareness, and knowledge about the post you applied for.
TNPSC Group 1 has three stages: (1) Preliminary Examination — 200 MCQ questions for 300 marks in 3 hours. This is used only for shortlisting; marks are not added to the final tally. (2) Main Examination — Descriptive papers including General Studies, Optional Subject (2 papers), and Tamil. (3) Oral Test (Interview). Final merit is based on Mains + Oral Test.
Typically 3–5 lakh candidates apply for TNPSC Group 1. About 20–25 times the vacancy count are shortlisted for Mains based on Prelims performance. With roughly 150–200 vacancies, about 4,000–5,000 candidates are called for Mains.
The Prelims cutoff is not officially published (it's just used for shortlisting). Based on trends, General category candidates typically need 150–180+ out of 300 to qualify for Mains, though this varies significantly with exam difficulty and vacancy count.
History, Political Science, Economics, and Public Administration are the most popular optional subjects. Sociology and Geography are also chosen. Tamil Literature is ideal for strong Tamil students. The best optional is one where you have genuine interest and depth of knowledge.
Many successful candidates take 2–4 attempts. Preparation ideally takes 12–18 months of focused study. The high competition and multi-stage process means persistence is essential. Using platforms like VetriApp for consistent mock test practice and analytics significantly improves your chances.
Not mandatory, but structured guidance helps. Many self-study candidates clear Group 1 using the right books, online resources, and consistent practice. VetriApp provides question banks, timed mock tests, and subject analytics that replicate what coaching classes offer — available 24/7 without commuting.
