Revenue Law and Land Reforms (50 questions) is UNIQUE to the VAO exam and not tested in other TNPSC exams. This section is where most candidates are underprepared — master it to gain a decisive advantage.
Read the Tamil Nadu Revenue Administration Manual and the textbook published by the TN Government for VAO exam preparation. These are the primary sources for Revenue Law questions.
Patta, Chitta, Adangal records and their differences, mutation procedures, and land classification questions are almost guaranteed. Understand these processes practically, not just theoretically.
The Land Ceiling Act 1961, Zamindari Abolition Act 1948, and Registration Act 1908 are the three most important laws. Know the key sections, provisions, and penalties.
Tamil Grammar (30 questions in Part C) is purely marks — study grammar rules systematically. Thirukkural knowledge is tested every year.
VAO exam has 200 questions in 3 hours = 54 seconds per question. Practice speed alongside accuracy. Take full timed mock tests regularly on VetriApp.
General Studies questions (Part A, 75 Q) for VAO are at 12th standard level. Your Samacheer Kalvi textbooks from 9th–12th standard are sufficient — no need for advanced books.
The VAO exam uniquely includes a Revenue Law & Land Reforms section (50 questions) that tests knowledge of Tamil Nadu land revenue administration, patta/chitta records, mutation proceedings, the Land Ceiling Act 1961, Zamindari abolition, Registration Act, and VAO duties. This section does not appear in Group 2, 2A, or Group 4 exams.
Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (12th standard / HSC) from a recognized board. Unlike Group 2 or Group 1, a degree is not required. This makes VAO accessible to HSC passouts who want to enter Tamil Nadu government service.
A VAO is responsible for maintaining land records (Patta, Chitta, Adangal), reporting encroachments, assisting in land acquisition, serving as liaison between villagers and Revenue Inspectors/Tahsildars, certifying birth/death/community/income certificates, implementing government schemes, and maintaining law and order at village level. VAOs are crucial to grass-root governance in Tamil Nadu.
50 out of 200 questions are from Revenue Law & Land Reforms (Part B). This 25% weightage makes it the second-largest section after General Studies. Scoring well in Revenue Law is essential to clear the VAO exam since most candidates skip this section.
VAO falls under Pay Level 8 in Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules 2017. The starting basic pay is around ₹19,500/month, with allowances taking the total to ₹25,000–₹30,000/month. VAO is a highly respected government post at the village level with strong job security.
Yes. Part C of the VAO exam (50 questions) is exclusively in Tamil — grammar, literature, and Thirukkural. Unlike Group 4 where candidates can choose English, the VAO Tamil section is mandatory. Knowledge of Tamil script and grammar is essential.
